The busy hub of the daily life at Cavendish Care is our activities centre which offers a wide range of different experiences and challenges to our clients.
In response to the lack of part-time college placements for the over 25’s, Cavendish Care set up our own Activity Resource Centre, the ARC.
We are based in Crawley and our Activities Co-ordinator runs sessions every week-day for our clients/tenants to attend if they choose.
We have previously run sessions such as flower arranging, tie-dye, pumpkin carving, sweet making, rocket car racing and First-Aid Training and are always looking for new things for our clients/tenants to try.
Our activities include...
Our Music Therapist comes in with his guitar, amp and microphones and leads a sing-along session. The clients/tenants can just sit and listen, or have a dance, or take their turn singing on the microphone.
Arts and activities
In this session we have an art project set out which clients/tenants can join in with if they wish. Other activities going on are puzzles, play-doh, colouring, word searches or for the more energetic, and weather permitting, they can take the sports equipment outside and play basketball, swing-ball, badminton etc.
Clients/tenants love preparing a different dish each week and taking it home to eat. We keep the recipes as varied as we can while sticking to the healthy lifestyle that the company promotes. (Although the sweet treats we make now and then usually go down very well).
We do have some regular sessions such as Yoga, Circuit Training and Reflexology & Relaxation where we have fully qualified experts in to run sessions for us to promote healthy living and exercise for all.
We try and offer as many different experiences and challenges as we can to our clients/tenants. We have previously run sessions such as flower arranging, tie-dye, pumpkin carving, sweet making, rocket car racing and First-Aid Training and are always looking for new things for our clients/tenants to try.
We have our own garden at the Activity Centre and in the summer we are busy out there digging, weeding, planting and watering. We grow fruit, vegetables, flowers and herbs. The clients/tenants enjoy working as a team in the garden to produce some lovely (and tasty) results.
In the winter months when it is too cold and wet outside for gardening, we stay in and plant bulbs and seeds, decorate pots, have garden design sessions and craft sessions based on flowers, plants and gardening. The decorated pots with bulbs we plant in time for Christmas are taken home and usually given as presents.
Sports and walks
On this activity, in the morning we usually start with a game of boccia which is similar to bowls but played while sitting down which means that everyone can join in. It gets very competitive between the red and the blue teams! Weather permitting we have a basketball court and a huge green/cricket field where we can play basketball, cricket, rounders, football and tennis. If the weather isn’t so good we play dodgeball, indoor cricket or set up an obstacle course in the hall.
After lunch we go for a walk, usually visiting a local pub for refreshments on the way. If it is raining we stay in the hall and set up the table tennis and practice throwing and catching with bean bags and soft balls. Some clients/tenants choose to get the puzzles, play-doh, puzzle books or art equipment out.
… and everything else
As well as a busy week at the Activity Centre and all the activities and events the clients/tenants attend which are on their regular timetables or are arranged by the staff in houses, we also run monthly evening events in our Training Offices.
We have had very successful Valentine discos, Halloween and Christmas parties and film and bingo nights.
What is an average day like?
